Who is Benny? (And why is he on my call?)
Benny Budget is the AI assistant built into symmetRE. Read his real origin story, where he shows up, and FAQs.
If you've spent any real time in symmetRE, you've probably run into Benny Budget. Benny for short.
Maybe he showed up as the little widget in the corner of your screen. Maybe he's the reason your last onboarding call got summarized before you'd even hung up the phone. Or maybe someone on your team just asked, mid-meeting, "There’s no way you have someone on your team named ‘Benny Budget’…That’s incredible."
That one's on us. We built him, gave him a personality, put him in the platform, and never really stopped to introduce him properly. So here's the introduction (and some backstory).
A few things up front, because I'd rather say them plainly than let them turn into a whole “thing”: Benny is not Benjamin Franklin. He's a character we made up inspired by him. He is, literally, the AI assistant inside symmetRE. The same one you talk to in the platform, and the same one behind the meeting notes on our calls.
Where he actually came from
Benny didn't start out as a mascot.
Years ago, when we were still pitching symmetRE in its early form, the whole thesis came down to one idea: if you manage real estate assets well, you have to be able to zoom all the way out. Not just this month's numbers or this one property. The full lifecycle of the asset, every stage of it, and how it all has to come together into one coherent plan. Owners and asset managers who did this well had a plan. The ones who struggled were reacting to whatever was in front of them that week.
Around the same time, I was reading Walter Isaacson's biography of Benjamin Franklin (shout out!). What got me wasn't the kite, or the founding-father stuff everyone already knows. It was how structured the guy was. Benjamin Franklin famously starting keeping a daily chart (at age 20) where he graded himself against a list of thirteen virtues he was trying to live up to. Every single day. Rating his own discipline.
It's a little intense and a lot neurotic. But it's also exactly the kind of "you need a plan and you need to actually track it" thinking we were trying to get across to prospects.
So, naturally, Benjamin Franklin became a muse. Not because we thought asset managers needed to be more like a founding father, but because he was a real, well-documented example of someone who treated planning like a discipline instead of an afterthought.
A lot of the old pitch decks have Franklin quotes throughout. "If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail" is one we used constantly, and it's stuck around internally as a bit of a mantra. It's blunt, it's a little old-fashioned, and it's exactly what we believed then and still believe now. Somewhere between the slide decks and the whiteboard sessions, the joke stopped being a joke and started being a character.
From "budget" to Benny
The name happened gradually, the way these things do. Actually, maybe they don’t. If you’ve ever worked with me before, you know that I am constantly giving names to things. And not just people. For example: when we we’re trying to break down some of the challenges between landlords and residents (this was in the very early / pre-pivot days of symmetRE), I started referring to these “characters” as “Landlord Larry” and “Resident Ralph” (see figure below, this is…unfortunately…a real slide).
In early pitch conversations, that “plan to fail” quote by Benji, was distilled in the an idea, and then eventually got shorthanded to "the budget". As in, the full plan you build the asset's numbers around. Stay with me here. Somewhere along the way that became "The Budget Franklin," as a half-joke about the Franklin comparison. And "The Budget Franklin" eventually just collapsed into "Benny." So there ya go.
Benny today
Eventually, as we were starting to incorporate AI into symmetRE, it only felt natural to give that a name, too. Benny was a easy one to reach for, and thus, “Benny Budget” was ripped from PowerPoint slides and brought to life.
When you open the AI widget in symmetRE, that's Benny. Our “AI notetaker”? That's Benny, too. Sure, he’s got some spectacles and one-liners, but that’s pretty much where the likeness stops. His job is to help our clients (even if he is a little sassy sometimes).
So the next time he shows up on a call or drops a line in the chat…that's Benny. He's not a founding father. He's our chatbot/AI/symmetRE-Guru, with an origin story we happen to be pretty fond of.

Where you'll actually see him
Inside the platform
When you open the AI widget in symmetRE, there’s Benny. He's reading from the same data your dashboards are already built on, under the same permissions your team already has. Ask him about a lease rollover or a variance to budget, and you're not getting a guess. You're getting an answer pulled from the same numbers you'd find yourself, just faster.
In your meeting notes
If you've had a call with our team this year, you've already met him. He was the one taking notes. The notetaker that joins your calls and sends a summary afterward isn't new. It's the same tool we’ve been using, now attached to a name instead of a generic logo. He listens, pulls out what was actually decided versus what's still open, and helps our team makes sure nothing’s missing.
In your reports
Add an AI Summary widget to any PDF report template, and Benny reads the data sitting in the other widgets you've already built (occupancy, NOI variance, leasing activity, whatever the report is built around) and writes the narrative paragraph that usually falls to whoever's closest to the deadline. Tell him what to focus on and how long to make it, and every word he writes stays editable before anything goes to an investor.
A few quick questions
Is Benny actually Benjamin Franklin?
No, but we won't pretend there's no resemblance. Think of him as Franklin's slightly unhinged doppelganger. Same obsession with planning and self-improvement, same taste for a good aphorism, dressed head to toe in symmetRE swag instead of a tricorn hat. We're not trying to convince anyone the actual Benjamin Franklin is quietly living inside your reporting platform. We just liked the comparison too much to leave it in a pitch deck.
If Benny isn't a WHO, then WHAT is he?
He's our version of an AI agent extraordinaire. The personality we put on top of the AI that's already built into symmetRE. He shows up everywhere that AI already touches your work: the chat widget inside the platform, the call notes that help our team run shop, and the summary paragraph on your PDF reports. Different surface, same character that gets you an answer faster than you'd get it yourself.
Is Benny the same thing as the symmetRE MCP?
No, and it's worth actually understanding the difference rather than skipping past it. Benny lives inside symmetRE. When you ask him something, he's pulling from the same dashboards, the same numbers, and the same permissions you already have inside the platform. And because he's built into the platform, he knows it from the inside — which dashboard holds what, which metric answers which question, which steps your workflows actually take. He isn't figuring the system out on the fly. He's done this before.
symmetRE's MCP is different. It's symmetRE's connector for the AI tool you're already using outside the platform (Claude, ChatGPT, etc.). Instead of asking Benny inside symmetRE, you're asking your own AI tool, and MCP is what lets that tool reach into symmetRE's data properly instead of guessing. That tool is plenty capable — but it's a visitor. It checks what exists, finds the right spot, then pulls the number, because it doesn't live here.
Neither one is more accurate than the other. They're reading the same validated data underneath, and they'll land on the same number. The difference is familiarity: Benny takes the shortest path because he already knows the building; an outside tool gets there too, it just reads the map first. So the question is where you happen to be standing when you ask — inside symmetRE, or inside the AI tool you already had open — and how much of the walking you'd rather skip.
Can I work with Benny outside of symmetRE?
No. There's no separate app, browser extension, or export of him. He only exists inside the symmetRE platform itself. If you want AI working with your symmetRE data from somewhere else, that's what MCP is for. Benny stays right where he is.
Does Benny have more access than I do?
No. He only sees what you're already permissioned to see inside symmetRE. Nothing from outside your organization's own environment, and no backstage pass to data you couldn't otherwise pull yourself. He does know the platform better than anyone — but knowing the building isn't the same as having keys to more rooms. Whatever you can see in the platform, that's what he can see. Nothing more.
